Music Education in Our Schools

The function of music education in the curriculum is to cultivate the total development of the student.  M= an must feel as well as think, and create as well as discover.  As educators we must cultivate in = the student sensitivity to the world of sound, form, color, emotions, and spiri= tual involvement, just as intellectually we must make him aware of language, symbols, and other tools of thought.

It= is the responsibility of the music education program to bring to every student the understanding and realization of his or her full potential.  A student will discover this poten= tial through awareness of self-expression and emotional well being, and by using skills as aids to musical expression.

It= is also the responsibility of the music education program to bring to every student experience in citizenship through self-discipline, courtesy, cooperation, t= ime management, and punctuality.  =

In= creased pressure for scholastic excellence and individual accomplishment increases = the need for music education in the curriculum.  Music is based on a mathematical s= ystem of symbols that are applied in a subjective manner through logic and creativity.  Musical training cultivates skills in discipline, home study, cooperation, and group dynamics using perfection as the standard.  Therefore the prime objective of music in education is to develop musically sensitive, intelligent adults who fully appreciate the significant contribution that music and the skills in citizenship that accompany musica= l training can make to the individual and ultimately to the community.
